The Why Bible — Read the KJV with Its Spiritual Meanings

The Why Bible is the complete King James Bible — all 66 books, 1,189 chapters, 31,102 verses — presented with a second rendering beside the text: each passage read in its spiritual meaning, the sense in which its people, places and things name states of the inner life. The King James words never change; the Meaning rendering stands next to them, so you can always see both the letter and what the letter carries.

The full text reads free in the app, where the reader keeps your place and the daily verse draws from the same corpus. Below is one complete chapter exactly as the app presents it — Genesis 1, the creation — so you can weigh the rendering for yourself before you ever sign in.

How to read these pages: the text itself comes first, verse by verse, in the volume's own translation. Beneath each verse stands its Meaning — a rendering of what the passage's terms name in the inner life, drawn from the correspondences the text itself uses. The text is never altered; the meaning is offered, not imposed.

Sample chapter — Genesis 1

1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

In the first principle, the Divine Mind brought forth the inner realm and the outer world.

2And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And the outer life was unformed and empty; and unilluminated consciousness lay upon the surface of the subconscious deep. And the Breath of God moved upon the surface of the unformed thoughts.

3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

And the Divine Mind said: Let understanding dawn. And understanding dawned.

4And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

And the Source saw the understanding, that it was good; and the Source divided the understanding from the ignorance.

5And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

And the Source called the understanding the Illuminated State, and the ignorance He called the Hidden State. And the fading of the old state and the dawning of the new were the first cycle.

6And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

And the Divine Mind said: Let there be an expanse of awareness in the midst of the unformed thoughts, and let it divide thought from thought — the truths above from the feelings below.

7And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

And the Source made the expanse of awareness, and divided the unformed feelings which were beneath the expanse from the spiritual truths which were above the expanse. And it was so.

8And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

And the Source called the expanse the Inner Heaven. And the fading and the dawning were the second cycle.

9And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

And the Divine Mind said: Let the unformed thoughts beneath the inner heaven be gathered together into one reservoir, and let formed, stable consciousness appear. And it was so.

10And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

And the Source called the stable consciousness the Outer World; and the gathering together of the thoughts He called the Seas — the great subconscious. And the Source saw that it was good.

11And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

And the Divine Mind said: Let the outer life bring forth tender new thoughts of truth, the concept yielding its idea, and the established belief yielding fruit after its nature, whose pattern-seed is in itself, upon the outer life. And it was so.

12And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

And the outer life brought forth tender thoughts of truth, and the concept yielding idea after its nature, and the belief-tree yielding fruit, whose pattern-seed was in itself, after its nature. And the Source saw that it was good.

13And the evening and the morning were the third day.

And the fading and the dawning were the third cycle.

14And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

And the Divine Mind said: Let there be ruling lights in the expanse of the inner heaven to divide the illuminated state from the hidden state; and let them be for marks of the states, and for the seasons of consciousness, and for cycles and for ages.

15And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

And let them be for ruling lights in the expanse of the inner heaven to pour understanding into the outer life. And it was so.

16And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

And the Source made two great ruling lights: the greater light — Divine Love-Wisdom — to govern the illuminated state, and the lesser light — reflected faith — to govern the hidden state; and the fixed knowledges of truth, the stars, He made also.

17And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

And the Source set them in the expanse of the inner heaven to pour understanding into the outer life,

18And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

and to govern the illuminated state and the hidden state, and to divide the understanding from the ignorance. And the Source saw that it was good.

19And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

And the fading and the dawning were the fourth cycle.

20And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

And the Divine Mind said: Let the reservoir of thought bring forth abundantly the animated life of the soul, and soaring thoughts that may fly above the outer world in the open expanse of the inner heaven.

21And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

And the Source created the great powers of the deep mind, and every animated faculty that stirs, which the reservoir of thought brought forth abundantly after their nature, and every soaring thought after its nature. And the Source saw that it was good.

22And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

And the Source blessed them — increased them by divine law — saying: Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the reservoir of the subconscious, and let the soaring thoughts multiply in the outer life.

23And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

And the fading and the dawning were the fifth cycle.

24And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

And the Divine Mind said: Let the outer life bring forth the animated faculty after its nature — the tamed affections, and the lowly sense-thoughts, and the living powers of the outer nature after their nature. And it was so.

25And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

And the Source made the untamed animal nature after its nature, and the tamed affections after their nature, and every lowly thought that moves along the ground of sense after its nature. And the Source saw that it was good.

26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

And the Divine Mind said: Let Us make the Complete Man in Our pattern, after Our nature; and let the spiritual mind have rightful rule over the knowledges of the deep, and over the soaring thoughts, and over the tamed affections, and over all the outer life, and over every low thought that moves upon it.

27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

So the Source created the Complete Man in His own pattern; in the pattern of God He created him; male and female — Understanding and Love, the knowing and the willing — He created them.

28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

And the Source blessed them, and the Source said unto them: Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the outer world, and bring it into order; and hold rightful rule over the knowledges of the deep, and over the soaring thoughts, and over every animated faculty that moves in the outer life.

29And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

And the Divine Mind said: Behold, I have given you every concept bearing its idea, which is upon the surface of all the outer life, and every established belief bearing fruit, whose pattern-seed is in itself — to you it shall be for spiritual nourishment.

30And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

And to every instinct of the outer nature, and to every soaring thought, and to every low thought that moves upon the ground, wherein there is the breath of life, I have given every tender truth for nourishment. And it was so.

31And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

And the Source saw every thing that He had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the fading and the dawning were the sixth cycle.
