Read the Book of Enoch Online — Full Text with Meanings
The Book of Enoch — 1 Enoch, the testament of Enoch, the seventh from Adam — was quoted by the early church, lost to the West for a thousand years, and recovered from Ethiopia in 1773. It tells of the Watchers who descended, the giants, the journeys through heaven and the coming judgment; Jude quotes it, and Genesis names its author in a single line: Enoch walked with God.
This is the complete text in R. H. Charles's 1917 translation — all 108 chapters, free to read — with the Enoch Companion's rendering beside it: each passage's spiritual meaning, in the manner of The Why Bible, so the vision's figures and places speak of the inner life they figure.
How to read these pages: the text itself comes first, verse by verse, in the volume's own translation. Beneath each verse stands its Meaning — a rendering of what the passage's terms name in the inner life, drawn from the correspondences the text itself uses. The text is never altered; the meaning is offered, not imposed.
About this book
The Book of Enoch — called 1 Enoch, to distinguish it from later books of the name — is the testament of Enoch, the seventh from Adam, who walked with God and was taken. It is not one book but a small library gathered under his name across the centuries before Christ: the Book of the Watchers, who descended and were bound; the Parables, with their visions of the Elect One and the judgment of the kings of the earth; the Book of the Luminaries, the order of the lights of heaven; the Dream Visions, the history of the world told in beasts; and the Epistle, the old seer's last charge to his children. The apostle Jude quotes it as prophecy. The early church read it widely; then the West lost it, and it survived whole only in Ethiopia, in the Ge'ez tongue, until copies came to Europe in the eighteenth century.
It stands here as a companion volume, and the distinction is deliberate. The Why Bible does not set Enoch inside the canon: the churches, with one ancient exception in Ethiopia, did not receive it as Scripture, and this edition does not overrule them. But the book breathes the same air as the Bible it accompanies. Its angels and watchers, its judgment and its hidden Son of man, its storehouses of the winds and its tree of wisdom belong to the inner world the canonical books also move in — Genesis itself leaves Enoch three verses and a mystery, and leaves the sons of God and the giants of chapter 6 unexplained. Enoch is the margin that illuminates the text: read after the parent volume, or beside it, as the tradition's own commentary on the world behind the world.
The renderings are made from R. H. Charles's translation of 1917, from the Ethiopic — the English text that stands beside them in this companion's complete volume — and like the King James text it is public domain; the choice of base text for the parent volume is explained in its front-matter essay, *Why the King James Text*. The rendering follows the discipline of that volume exactly: the same lexicon-first method, the same correspondences — the angels the divine ideas ministering between the higher and lower consciousness, the Watchers the faculties set to guard the heights who descended into the sense-life they were sent to watch — and the same name discipline, under which a name without an attested sense, Dûdâêl among them, is left unglossed rather than invented. Where Enoch's figures needed new glosses, they were coined from the nearest principle of the established lexicon and logged for the editor's review; some two hundred and seventy of them were ruled on in the editorial pass of 2026-10-25. What was true of the parent volume is true of its companion: in the complete volume the ancient text stands untouched on its side of the page, and the Meaning stands beneath it; this volume carries the renderings alone, each under its section, chapter, and verse, to be read with Charles's text open beside it — the two read together, though they lie in separate books.
