The Book of Enoch 9
How to read these pages: the text itself comes first, verse by verse, in the volume's own translation. Beneath each verse stands its Meaning — a rendering of what the passage's terms name in the inner life, drawn from the correspondences the text itself uses. The text is never altered; the meaning is offered, not imposed.
Charles translation (1917)
1And then Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel looked down from heaven and saw much blood being shed upon the earth, and all lawlessness being wrought upon the earth.
And then Michael — the champion faculty — Uriel, the illumination-faculty, Raphael, the healing faculty, and Gabriel, the strength-faculty, looked down from the inner realm and saw much blood, the life-stream of states, being shed upon the outer life, and all lawlessness being wrought upon the outer life.
2And they said one to another: 'The earth made †without inhabitant cries the voice of their crying† up to the gates of heaven.
And they said one to another: 'The outer life, made as though without its true inhabitant, cries — the voice of their crying rises up to the gates of heaven, the ordered openings of the inner realm.
3⌈⌈And now to you, the holy ones of heaven⌉⌉, the souls of men make their suit, saying, "Bring our cause before the Most High.".'
And now to you, the holy ones of heaven — states wholly of the divine order in the inner realm — the souls of men make their suit, saying, "Bring our cause before the Most High," the Source under His title of height.'
4And they said to the Lord of the ages: 'Lord of lords, God of gods, King of kings, 〈and God of the ages〉, the throne of Thy glory (standeth) unto all the generations of the ages, and Thy name holy and glorious and blessed unto all the ages!
And they said to the Lord of the ages: 'Indwelling LORD of lords, Divine Mind of divine minds, King of kings — the ruling state over every ruling state — and Source of the ages, the throne, the seat of Thy ruling authority, of Thy glory, the manifested weight of Thy Presence, stands unto all the generations of the ages, and Thy name is holy and glorious and blessed — increased by divine favour — unto all the ages!
5Thou hast made all things, and power over all things hast Thou: and all things are naked and open in Thy sight, and Thou seest all things, and nothing can hide itself from Thee.
Thou hast made all things, and power over all things hast Thou; and all things are naked and open in Thy sight, and Thou seest all things, and nothing can hide itself from Thee.
6Thou seest what Azâzêl hath done, who hath taught all unrighteousness on earth and revealed the eternal secrets which were (preserved) in heaven, which men were striving to learn:
Thou seest what Azâzêl — the concentrated adversarial state — hath done, who hath taught all unrighteousness, every state out of right relation to the order, on the outer life, and revealed the eternal secrets which were preserved in the inner realm, which the faculties were striving to learn before their time:
7And Semjâzâ, to whom Thou hast given authority to bear rule over his associates.
And Semjâzâ — the ruling faculty of the descent — to whom Thou hast given authority to bear rule over his associates.
8And they have gone to the daughters of men upon the earth, and have slept with the women, and have defiled themselves, and revealed to them all kinds of sins.
And they have gone to the daughters of men upon the outer life — the affection-states of the outer man — and have slept with the women, and have defiled themselves, and revealed to them all kinds of sins, every form of error.
9And the women have borne giants, and the whole earth has thereby been filled with blood and unrighteousness.
And the women have borne giants — the swollen offspring-states begotten when vigilance couples with sense — and the whole outer life has thereby been filled with blood, its life-stream shed, and unrighteousness.
10And now, behold, the souls of those who have died are crying and making their suit to the gates of heaven, and their lamentations have ascended: and cannot cease because of the lawless deeds which are wrought on the earth.
And now, behold, the souls of those who have died are crying and making their suit to the gates of heaven, and their lamentations have ascended, and cannot cease because of the lawless deeds which are wrought on the outer life.
11And Thou knowest all things before they come to pass, and Thou seest these things and Thou dost suffer them, and Thou dost not say to us what we are to do to them in regard to these.'
And Thou knowest all things before they come to pass, and Thou seest these things and Thou dost suffer them, and Thou dost not say to us what we are to do to them in regard to these.'
