The Book of Enoch 98
How to read these pages: the text itself comes first, verse by verse, in the volume's own translation. Beneath each verse stands its Meaning — a rendering of what the passage's terms name in the inner life, drawn from the correspondences the text itself uses. The text is never altered; the meaning is offered, not imposed.
Charles translation (1917)
1And now I swear unto you, to the wise and to the foolish, For ye shall have manifold experiences on the earth.
And now I swear to you, to the wise and to the foolish — to states that hold wisdom and to states that lack it — for you shall have manifold experiences on the earth, passing through many and varied states in the outer life.
2For ye men shall put on more adornments than a woman, And coloured garments more than a virgin: In royalty and in grandeur and in power, And in silver and in gold and in purple, And in splendour and in food they shall be poured out as water.
For you men shall put on more adornments than a woman — the affection-nature outdone in outward display — and coloured garments, outer coverings of show, more than a virgin, a pure unjoined affection: in royalty and in grandeur and in power, and in silver and in gold and in purple, and in splendour and in food, they shall be poured out as water, unformed thought spent without measure.
3Therefore they shall be wanting in doctrine and wisdom, And they shall perish thereby together with their possessions; And with all their glory and their splendour, And in shame and in slaughter and in great destitution, Their spirits shall be cast into the furnace of fire.
Therefore they shall be wanting in doctrine — instruction in the divine order — and wisdom, and they shall perish thereby together with their possessions; and with all their seeming glory and their splendour, and in shame and in slaughter and in great destitution, their spirits shall be cast into the furnace of fire — the fire-state where error consumes itself.
4I have sworn unto you, ye sinners, as a mountain has not become a slave, And a hill does not become the handmaid of a woman, Even so sin has not been sent upon the earth, But man of himself has created it, And under a great curse shall they fall who commit it.
I have sworn to you, you error-bound states, as a mountain, an exalted state, has not become a slave, and a hill, a lesser height, does not become the handmaid of a woman, the affection-nature, even so sin — error — has not been sent upon the earth, the outer life; but man of himself has created it, and under a great curse, a lasting binding consequence, shall they fall who commit it.
5And barrenness has not been given to the woman, But on account of the deeds of her own hands she dies without children.
And barrenness, unfruitfulness, has not been given to the woman, the affection-nature; but on account of the deeds of her own hands, her own works, she dies without children, without offspring-states to carry her forward.
6I have sworn unto you, ye sinners, by the Holy Great One, That all your evil deeds are revealed in the heavens, And that none of your deeds of oppression are covered and hidden.
I have sworn to you, you error-bound states, by the Holy Great One, that all your evil deeds are revealed in the heavens, the inner realm, and that none of your deeds of oppression — your pressing down of other states — are covered and hidden.
7And do not think in your spirit nor say in your heart that ye do not know and that ye do not see that every sin is every day recorded in heaven in the presence of the Most High.
And do not think in your spirit nor say in your heart that you do not know and that you do not see that every sin, every error, is every day recorded in heaven, in the inner record, in the presence of the Most High.
8From henceforth ye know that all your oppression wherewith ye oppress is written down every day till the day of your judgement.
From henceforth you know that all your oppression, every pressing of one state upon another, is written down every day till the day of your judgement — the day the divine order confronts the state all at once.
9Woe to you, ye fools, for through your folly shall ye perish: and ye transgress against the wise, and so good hap shall not be your portion.
Woe to you, you fools — states empty of wisdom — for through your folly shall you perish; and you transgress against the wise, and so good hap, a good portion, shall not be your portion.
10And now, know ye that ye are prepared for the day of destruction: wherefore do not hope to live, ye sinners, but ye shall depart and die; for ye know no ransom; for ye are prepared for the day of the great judgement, for the day of tribulation and great shame for your spirits.
And now, know that you are prepared for the day of destruction: wherefore do not hope to live, you error-bound states, but you shall depart and die; for you know no ransom — no atoning price that buys the state back; for you are prepared for the day of the great judgement, for the day of tribulation, the crisis-day, and great shame for your spirits.
11Woe to you, ye obstinate of heart, who work wickedness and eat blood: Whence have ye good things to eat and to drink and to be filled? From all the good things which the Lord the Most High has placed in abundance on the earth; therefore ye shall have no peace.
Woe to you, you obstinate of heart — hardened in your innermost motive — who work wickedness, deeds twisted away from the order, and eat blood, taking the life-stream of a state to feed appetite: whence have you good things to eat and to drink and to be filled? From all the good things which the indwelling LORD, the Most High, has placed in abundance on the earth, the outer life; therefore you shall have no peace, no rest within the order.
12Woe to you who love the deeds of unrighteousness: wherefore do ye hope for good hap unto yourselves? know that ye shall be delivered into the hands of the righteous, and they shall cut off your necks and slay you, and have no mercy upon you.
Woe to you who love the deeds of disorder: wherefore do you hope for good hap unto yourselves? Know that you shall be delivered into the hands of the right-ordered states, and they shall cut off your necks and slay you — the error-state severed and ended by the cutting word of truth — and have no mercy upon you, no sparing of the disorder itself.
13Woe to you who rejoice in the tribulation of the righteous; for no grave shall be dug for you.
Woe to you who rejoice in the tribulation, the crisis, of the right-ordered; for no grave shall be dug for you — no resting place prepared for your state in the shadow of death.
14Woe to you who set at nought the words of the righteous; for ye shall have no hope of life.
Woe to you who set at nought the words of the right-ordered; for you shall have no hope of life — no living expectation while you refuse the word of the order.
15Woe to you who write down lying and godless words; for they write down their lies that men may hear them and act godlessly towards (their) neighbour.
Woe to you who write down lying and godless words; for they write down their lies that men may hear them and act godlessly towards their neighbour — the fellow state that dwells alongside their own.
16Therefore they shall have no peace but die a sudden death.
Therefore they shall have no peace, no rest within the order, but die a sudden death — the error-state ending abruptly when its lie can no longer sustain it.
