The Book of Enoch 5

How to read these pages: the text itself comes first, verse by verse, in the volume's own translation. Beneath each verse stands its Meaning — a rendering of what the passage's terms name in the inner life, drawn from the correspondences the text itself uses. The text is never altered; the meaning is offered, not imposed.

Charles translation (1917)

1Observe ⌈⌈ye⌉⌉ how the trees cover themselves with green leaves and bear fruit: wherefore give ye heed ⌈and know⌉ with regard to all ⌈His works⌉, and recognize how He that liveth for ever hath made them so.

Observe how the trees — the established beliefs — cover themselves with green leaves and bear fruit, the results of belief made visible: wherefore give heed and know with regard to all His works, and recognize how He that lives for ever — the eternal Source — has made them so.

2And ⌈all⌉ His works go on ⌈thus⌉ from year to year for ever, and all the tasks ⌈which⌉ they accomplish for Him, and ⌈their tasks⌉ change not, but according as ⌈⌈God⌉⌉ hath ordained so is it done.

And all His works go on thus from year to year for ever, and all the tasks which they accomplish for Him, and their tasks change not, but according as the Source has ordained, so is it done.

3And behold how the sea and the rivers in like manner accomplish and ⌈change not⌉ their tasks ⌈from His commandments⌉.

And behold how the sea — the great subconscious reservoir of thought — and the rivers, the currents of life and thought flowing through the state, in like manner accomplish and change not their tasks, from His commandments — the rules of the inner order made plain.

4But ye--ye have not been steadfast, nor done the commandments of the Lord, But ye have turned away and spoken proud and hard words With your impure mouths against His greatness. Oh, ye hard-hearted, ye shall find no peace.

But you — you have not been steadfast, nor done the commandments of the indwelling LORD; but you have turned away and spoken proud and hard words with your impure mouths against His greatness. Oh, you hard-hearted — your affections hardened against the order — you shall find no peace, no rest within the order.

5Therefore shall ye execrate your days, And the years of your life shall perish, And ⌈the years of your destruction⌉ shall be multiplied in eternal execration, And ye shall find no mercy. 6a.

Therefore shall you execrate your days — your cycles of life — and the years of your life shall perish, and the years of your destruction shall be multiplied in lasting execration, and you shall find no mercy.

6In those days ye shall make your names an eternal execration unto all the righteous, b. And by you shall ⌈all⌉ who curse, curse, And all the sinners ⌈and godless⌉ shall imprecate by you, 7c. And for you the godless there shall be a curse. 6d. And all the . . . shall rejoice, e. And there shall be forgiveness of sins, f. And every mercy and peace and forbearance: g. There shall be salvation unto them, a goodly light. i. And for all of you sinners there shall be no salvation, j But on you all shall abide a curse. 7a.

In those days you shall make your names — your very natures — a lasting execration unto all the righteous, the right-ordered states; and by you shall all who curse, curse, and all the sinners and godless — the states in error, acting apart from the order — shall imprecate by you. And for you, the godless, there shall be a curse. And all the . . . shall rejoice, and there shall be forgiveness of sins — error covered and set aside — and every mercy and peace and forbearance: there shall be salvation unto them, deliverance into the order, a goodly light — understanding dawning. And for all of you sinners there shall be no salvation, but on you all shall abide a curse.

7But for the elect there shall be light and joy and peace, b. And they shall inherit the earth. 8

But for the elect — the chosen states — there shall be light and joy and peace: understanding, gladness, and rest in the order; and they shall inherit the earth — the outer realm made theirs in ordered possession.

8And then there shall be bestowed upon the elect wisdom, And they shall all live and never again sin, Either through ungodliness or through pride: But they who are wise shall be humble. 9

And then there shall be bestowed upon the elect wisdom, and they shall all live and never again sin — never again miss the mark of the order — either through ungodliness or through pride: but they who are wise shall be humble.

9And they shall not again transgress, Nor shall they sin all the days of their life, Nor shall they die of (the divine) anger or wrath, But they shall complete the number of the days of their life. And their lives shall be increased in peace, And the years of their joy shall be multiplied, In eternal gladness and peace, All the days of their life.

And they shall not again transgress, nor shall they sin all the days of their life, nor shall they die of the divine anger or wrath, but they shall complete the number of the days of their life — their cycle fulfilled. And their lives shall be increased in peace, and the years of their joy shall be multiplied, in lasting gladness and peace, all the days of their life.
